Key Fob Replacement for the Seat Ibiza

The refreshed fifth-generation Ibiza is a contender in the crowded supermini segment. It is up against the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Ford Fiesta.

With a thumb nail, or a small screwdriver with a flat head (A) lift upwards the key fob compartment cover (B). Replace the coin battery CR2025 to ensure that it is placed in the correct direction and polarity.

Dead Coin Battery

A dead battery on a coin is the most frequent cause of a key fob not locking or unlocking your vehicle. When it is dead, you will notice an increase in range or no power. It is simple to replace it with a new (CR2025) one from your local store. Be aware that using the wrong or non-compatible batteries could damage your key fob. Make sure the battery you replace has the same size and voltage and has the same specification.

If your device was exposed to clean water, like rain or soapy tap water, it is possible that the chip inside has been damaged due to corrosion. You may try cleaning the chip with isopropyl Alcohol or an electronic cleaner to test if it helps, but it is likely the chip has been damaged and fried.

The most simple solution is to purchase an entirely new key fob. Most major car dealers sell keys and can be installed by a seasoned mechanic. You can also purchase them online, such as on eBay. It is best to work on a surface that is equipped with adequate lighting. This makes it easier to work on the tiny parts inside. You'll also be able to avoid putting something in the wrong location. Always work on the key fob in a secured and safe place.

Water Damage

If your key fob is submerged after dropping it into the pool or fumbling it in the wash, you may think it's a goner but there's a chance. The problem is when the circuit board inside the fob comes in contact with water. It makes an excellent conductor, and it shorts out the components. It also speeds up the process of rust and corrosion.

Luckily, this is simple to fix. Find something absorbent, and put it inside the fob. A paper towl or tissue is ideal. Then apply an alcohol-soaked cotton swab and a cotton swab isopropyl alcohol to clean the circuit board as well as other components to eliminate any battery acid residue and contamination. Allow  G28CarKeys  to air dry in a dry, warm environment for a few weeks.

Replace the battery when the fob has dried out by replacing it with a new one with the same dimensions and the same polarity ('+' (pointing upwards). The fob might be difficult to open to get to the battery, but should you have a flat-head screwdriver, it should be easy to slide in. Once the fob has been reassembled it should function in a normal manner. If it fails, you may have to re-program it or replace the module.

Radio Interference

When a keyfob operates properly, it transmits a radio frequency that is picked up by a receiver module in your car. If the signal is not received, your key fob won't work. This could be due to objects like weather conditions or other transmitters that operate at the same frequency close to your car.

This can cause your key fob to not be able to activate the vehicle's functions like the ignition switch or the security system. It is recommended to replace the battery of your key fob.

Some LED lighting from the aftermarket that utilizes the same frequency as a remote key fob might interfere with the signal and block it from reaching the receiver modules. The LED's lighting needs to be turned off or switched to a different frequency to be able to avoid interference.

If the problem persists after replacing the battery, the antenna of your key fob could be damaged or is malfunctioning. The antenna is responsible for transmitting a signal between the key fob and the receiver module. The OBDII scanner is able to aid in diagnosing the issue by telling you what is wrong with the system. The scanner will ask you for details about the vehicle you own like the make and model of the vehicle, the type of engine, and VIN number.

Faulty Receiver Module

The key fob has a receiver module that transmits signals to lock and unlock the key fob. If this module is damaged and the on-board electronics will cease to function. Reprogramming the key fob using an OBDII scan, or replacing it may help.

This problem could be caused by a dead coin-cell either from water damage or signal interference. You can try resetting the computer on board by disconnecting the battery 12 volts for 15 minutes. This will eliminate any remaining electric current that could cause problems. Begin by removing your cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, you can reconnect your battery in reverse order. First, positive, then negative next.

The internal chip of the key fob can also be damaged by water or dirt. If your key's function stopped after it got wet, you need to clean the electronic component with isopropyl ethanol or an electronic cleaner prior to installing the battery. If it stops working after exposure to soapy or salty water the chip may be damaged and must be replaced.

A damaged antenna module fuse may also be the cause. It's the fuse that transmits a signal to the vehicle to lock or unlock. The fuse can be found in several places, depending on the model. For instance it could be located under the rear seat, or in the trunk, or the side of the dashboard.
